James Brown's Jumpsuits
July 19, 2008
Items from James Brown's estate went on auction at Christie's on Thursday. Check out these great photos of his jumpsuits‚ furniture‚ shoes and even hair supplies‚ from the NY Times. And here's their article about the auction. Some interesting tidbits:
Some of his family was dismayed by the sale. "A very sad day for my family‚" said his son.
DJ Shadow bought a silver-plated tray awarded to commemorate Brown's 1965 hit "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" for $800.
A "paranoid note he once scrawled on loose leaf paper alleging that his record label was out to kill him" went for $7‚000. Wow!
And a "single-lot offering of 80 hair rollers‚ accompanied by spray styling products like Smooth Sheen‚ Finisheen and Volumax‚ a Polaroid of Brown with his hair up in curlers‚ and a variety of picks and combs" went for $4‚800.
Spike Lee is planning a film about the Godfather of Soul.
But why don't you get on up and go read it yourself? (Sorry.)
Let's Give Mikey Some Security
July 18, 2008
If you've been to Higher Ground or a festival or JamCruise‚ you've probably come across Mikey VanGulden. With his big ol' dreadlocks and his inches towering over you‚ he looks like he can kick your ass hard‚ but he greets you with a warm smile.
But that smile couldn't ward off a car‚ which on July 5 ran through a red light and hit Mikey on his bike. He spent days in the ICU and ER‚ and is lucky to be alive. Unfortunately‚ Mikey doesn't have insurance‚ and you can imagine the bills that are racking up.
Here's what that warm smile can do‚ though: bring people together to help a brother out. Last night at Nectar's a benefit featuring Turkey Bouillon Mafia with special guests like Seth Yacovone and Dave Grippo brought in over $4‚000 for Mikey. The place was packed to the brim‚ showing just how much people love him.
You can show some love‚ too‚ by clicking on the "donate" button on the right side of this blog page that was set up for Mikey (which also has photos from last night).
Going to see live music is a beautiful thing‚ and it's even more beautiful when you're not greeted at the door by an asshole. Let's show Mikey how much we appreciate that.

Black Cab Sessions with My Morning Jacket‚ and Other Video Entertainment Goodies
July 17, 2008
Writer Adam King came over last night to pick up a CD for review‚ and ended up staying for some wine and music talk. And to make us laugh. He always‚ always makes us laugh. But more importantly‚ he turns us on to good stuff. Like:
The Black Cab Sesssions. Videos of musicians performing in the back of classic London black cabs. So simple. So brilliant. Here's My Morning Jacket doing "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2." And there are more‚ including Bon Iver‚ Man Man‚ Cold War Kids‚ and Death Cab For Cutie.
Speaking of Death Cab For Cutie‚ Adam talked about how he's been won over and how great their Sunday set at Bonnaroo was. Said he saw the video below and it was so killer that he knew he had to dig deeper. He now owns all their albums. I agree: this video gets me going.
And‚ lastly‚ we talked about Coldplay for a while. We didn't come to a grand conclusion. Basically‚ they're not super great and they're not super not-great. But Adam showed us‚ people who haven't had TV since 2004‚ this video. It melds into a live show? Pretty cool. Thanks‚ Adam‚ for catching us up on 2005.

Tim Palmieri‚ the guitarist extraordinaire from The Breakfast‚ plays Phish's "Reba" solo acoustic. Pretty bad ass.
Pick Up State of Mind at Amoeba
July 15, 2008
On our recent trip to San Francisco‚ we State of Mind editors masturbated went shopping for music at Amoeba Records on Haight St. It's amazing to see so much music -- real‚ tangible‚ hold-in-your-hand music -- in one place. Their inventory is incredible. Add in the posters on the wall‚ the pleasant and knowledgeable staff and the vibe‚ and you've got yourself a music lover's dream. Ahhh.
And we're pleased to announce that starting with our next issue‚ you will be able to pick up State of Mind for free at the San Francisco‚ Berkley and Hollywood Amoebas. We feel right at home.
Here's a great clip from What's in My Bag at Amoeba.com of the Howlin Rain guys telling about the goods they picked up after their in-store. Check that out and then head on over to our interview with Ethan Miller. And see below for some pics of us in our glory at Amoeba. Mmm. Did you know that it used to be a bowling alley? Look... it was.
